A FAVICON is a small graphic that will show when people bookmark
(add to favorites) your site

Instead of the regular IE logo
favicon 2

They will see your icon (mine is the little hearts)
favicon 1

To have a personalized Icon made for you, I will need:

If you don't have an image, I have tons of little icons that I can use to match your layout. Just mention it in the comments

Be advised that every time you change layouts, you should change the icon to reflect your current theme
Just be aware that once a person has bookmarked your site, the icon that was present the first time
will be the one that displays, unless they delete it from their favorites and bookmark it again

After you receive your new icon, upload it directly to the root of your site
DO NOT change the extension or it will not show!

If your site resides on a free host, don't worry.
Let's say you have a site something like http://www.geocities.com/~heartnuggets/
You can still use this method of setting the icon, but it requires one more step.
You'll need to put on every page someone can bookmark, the following code between the <HEAD> tags on the page:

<LINK REL="SHORTCUT ICON" HREF="/~heartnuggets/favicon.ico">

The URL that alerts the browser to the icon is just your Web address with the domain taken off and a leading slash.
Just make sure the icon is where the browser will find it

The same works if you want a different icon associated with special pages
You can even direct the browser to any absolute location you want:
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="http://www.yoursite.com/graphics/icons/faviconame.ico">

(see below, I have a different icon associated with my main page )
favicon3

~ NOTE ~
The Favicon is not foolproof; it doesn't always work right with subdirectories, and clearing your cache can wipe it out
